Many moons ago, the Montreal Canadiens were a non-playoff team with a new General Manager, a new Coach, a pretty raw roster, and what one would tentatively call a vision for the future. With that future as a goal, the Canadiens scouting department convinced the new management to draft a player who missed almost his entire draft eligible season. What a gamble that was. The talent, however, was undeniable.
Here we are, almost 5 full seasons and a recent coaching change since his draft and the same problem Therrien created has not been solved. He believes that Galchenyuk will never be a good number one centre. “Why will he never be a good center?” you may ask. Because his parents – like true weenies – didn’t name him “David Desharnais”.
The young man is a centre. That is not questionable anymore. Sure, I will give his critics the fact that he has not played very well lately, resulting in a lot of plays ending on his stick. He seems nervous, overwhelmed, whatever you want to call it. I am not arguing that he be on the first line right now. I completely understand why he should not be.
The answer however, is not to continue jerking him around from wing to centre and back. If he’s in a rough patch, you put him on the second or third line, you shelter his minutes, and you work on his faceoffs in practice. You put him with a spark-plug winger, like Gallagher or Shaw (depending on the line) and you let him work out of his rut.
Today, I see he is going to play with Shaw and Lekhonen (what a player this Arturi is already eh?). What a quality line! WOW! LOVE IT! Oh wait… Shaw is centre? Oh. No. No thanks.
Want to help the kid? Want to get him to be the centre you so desperately need? LET HIM PLAY CENTRE FOR CHRIST’S SAKE. LET HIM FIGURE IT OUT. LET HIM HAVE HIS UPS AND DOWNS WITHOUT FEELING LIKE HE’LL BE SWITCHED POSITIONS.
I love you Claude. I’ve established you read this blog. So hear my plea again, please Claude. You’re better than the ignorant man who you replaced. Don’t make the same mistakes.
THIS ORGANIZATION IS WASTING ALEX GALCHENYUK. PLEASE MAKE IT STOP.
Scared that Galchenyuk will only reach his potential when he is traded to the Nashville Predators
